When I was getting on the website this morning, I saw a notification that I was *message farming* and if I do it again I get a ban. I honestly think this was a mistake but if it wasn't then can one of the mods please explain to me how I was message farming, because before the message counter got removed I wasn't even in the top five for most messages that month. https://imgur.com/a/MKD7UqD

I think it is in that stupid topic "Replies for school fight" or a similar name, the moderator saying that everyone posted a message in this forum will get a warn

mods think you are posting low-effort content just to increase your message count and rank (which as of now no one except them can see lol) for bragging rights apparently. from your recent messages i can see that only like 1 message couldve been replaced with a reaction (unless you posted in a deleted topic) so clearly this is a false warning, mods are super triggerhappy with 'message farming' so just appeal in their dms. they constantly think people are spamming the forums, they forget that in a casual forum people are going to type 'fr' or 'true' instead of clicking a button sometimes

I also got a warning for the same reason, but on a different topic (where I only replied 2 or 3 times 😭), and on that same month, I was on the top of the message leaderboard. But it wasn’t because I was message farming, I had a topic that was blowing up in submissions(Rating Your Circuits from 0-100) , which caused the monthly counter go up to 60. Oh, and my warning had been up for the past two months…

Y'all weren't really ACTIVELY message farming but you did partake in a topic named "Turn the replies into a school fight" which is definitely useless, immature and once again, turns attention away from actually interesting topics about the game, or Mario Kart games, etc.

I personnally disagree, I think the forum isn't like a groupchat, but whatever, I can't convince you, you think the same thing since 2023, I'm assuming it won't change

Besides the topic here is dumb af lol and it's not like it's something we haven't addressed before, this forum needs to be more about the game that is attached to it rather than some random stuff like that

As far as I'm concerned, message farming is just the name associated with entertaining useless topics instead of reporting them. You don't have to be actively trying to climb the leaderboard anymore, mods just don't want you to ignore the game with useless things like "what color shirt should I wear tomorrow" or "rate my pet 1-10". Those things aren't connected to the game, or the IP, or anything else about MKPC, so those topics and anything related to those topics take the fall. Bystanding is fair game, but you're posting messages in the topic actively allowing it to gain traction even though it's a meaningless topic that has nothing to do with the game or anything about the game (the people who created it, participate in it, etc.) It's a slippery slope when defining "what has to do with MKPC", but some of those things are justified mistakes. "Make the replies a school fight" is a completely unjustifiable mistake and should result in an action that makes you not want to participate in those kinds of topics, in this case, that action was a warn. There was no mistake, and there is no oppression, just follow the rules and stay far away from anything that opposes those rules.

Personal topics okayness chart (I'm not a mod so don't use this as some sort of stone tablet):

Birdo is my sworn enemy (applies to Mario which applies to Mario kart, and Mario kart applies to MKPC) [Acceptable]

Is Mapno4 an evil individual? (applies directly to a member(s) in MKPC) [Acceptable]

What Should I Name My Dog (has nothing even loosely to do with MKPC) [Message farm]

Who do you main in smash bros? (again, Nintendo ip, also a video game, passable) [Acceptable]

Reply to a person with a name that has the same first letter (only applies vaguely to members in MKPC and hardly anything about the actual website or game, if so, loosely, and unspecific) [Message farm]

Rate circuit 1-10 (Applies to MKPC tracks, creates engagement) [Acceptable]

To me, it doesn't matter the count, or the reason, it's just that the topics that have nothing to do with the game subtract from people's experience with the game. To many people, MKPC is just another 4chan, and that's not the intention of the forums. If you have something stupid to say, take it to SFA (Space for anything), it's literally in the name. Don't flood MKPC with stuff like "school fight in the replies" or whatever, it's dumb, and you should know better than to entertain it.

SFA: https://mkpc.malahieude.net/topic.php?topic=16943 (Still do not use this as a GC you have so many more options than MKPC it's no longer a good excuse)

message farming is basically where people would deliberately send lots of messages to be at the top of the message leaderboards (which no longer exist)

Message farming is just an outdated term, however the problem still persists. Removing message count was only a tiny part of the issues with the forum.

Fact of the matter is that people use the forums instead of playing the game. Part of it is the website's fault, the other part is the community's.

In my opinion, forums should only be for MKPC related topics but that's not my decision to make.

i understand but we want to keep the mkpc forum strictly mkpc related, but a lot of under 13 users have nowhere safe to go outside of mkpc and interact with their friends there. on discord there are always separate servers or channels for offtopic activity, but on the forum its displayed on par with mkpc related topics in the recent list. topics like 'school fight in the replies' might be low effort, but the reason why people post in them is often just to interact with the people here, not necessarily to farm engagement or a hidden rank. thats why generally in a forum the offtopic/social sections have the most activity. i understand that we dont want the forum to stop being about mkpc entirely but we shoudnt create a 'play mkpc or leave' narrative for younger users. i dont want to come off as aggressive. i totally get that you want to keep the focus on the game itself. but i think theres a side to this worth considering from the user perspective. if these posts are cluttering the recent topics list, maybe a better solution would be a some kind of filter, rather than issuing warnings for people just trying to be social.

I agree with Pianta, the purpose of the topic was very clear (a school fight roleplay) and not useless, and CraftoMK09's message was literally on topic. I can somewhat justify warning the original poster as the topic was immature (edit: I have discovered the topic creator is now banned for other reasons) but there was nothing Crafto (or anyone else in the topic) did that is ban worthy. But if you REALLY think it is justifiable to warn Crafto, then "message farming" is an inaccurate and confusing term, "useless message" or simply "spam" wouldve fit much better and would have prevented this topic from having been created in the first place

I fully understand that you want people to play the game but if you want to argue that the forum should be only for stuff that is related to MKPC, well actually random things like this are literally what the "various discussions" heading is for

I might as well post my thoughts here. Keep in mind I haven't really been on in the last week so there might be some gaps in my knowledge, especially about the topic in question.

KerNL wrote:

This is true. Even though the message counter was removed there have been a few cases of people just posting a lot of (honestly unimportant) messages, so the forum section on the home page would just be filled with their names. And no, I don't mean only 1 or 2 cases.

For the purpose of this topic, I'll still use the phrase 'message farming' since we haven't yet adopted a new phrase.

CraftoMK09 wrote:

Firstly, I wouldn't consider being outside of the Top 5 much of a reason against message farming, it's more about how many messages you send rather than your placement. It's not a good way to look at it, although admittedly, compared to others you don't really have that big of a problem with farming. The warn was probably because you got involved in a topic that promoted it, and maybe some of your messages there contributed to the problem (again, going back to what I said earlier I didn't see the comments so I could be partially wrong).

TRlPLE_T wrote:

I don't think we're triggerhappy, and I'd argue our inaction might've gotten us here. I also don't think we're overcorrecting, and if people wanna agree/disagree with something there are several reactions that exist.

Mods have always cracked down on spammy messages, it's just that spam is more prevalent now.

-Natsuki- wrote:

This is not true, you were warned for something else entirely according to the logs, and the reason is a bit 💀. Warns also don't automatically go away.

Mapno4 wrote:

This is pretty good, more people should read it.

Nodac64 wrote:

This is true, ESPECIALLY for anyone 13+. Anyone under 13 probably shouldn't be on social media because it's not healthy long term (even for adults tbh) but that's not my call to make. Regardless of age though, the rules really aren't that hard to follow.

KerNL wrote:

I wouldn't keep it only for MKPC because there's only so much that can be spoken about. Anything Nintendo related is perfectly fine, and if people wanna discuss about big things like GD or Roblox for example, idm those either. Same forum rules would still apply.

TRlPLE_T wrote:
...but a lot of under 13 users have nowhere safe to go outside of mkpc and interact with their friends there.

The problem with this argument is that it implies we disregard the safe spaces people are entitled to, which is not true. We aren't making MKPC unsafe in the slightest. We're all for friend interactions but there are more sensible ways to do it (I'll get to it in the next quote).

Bit of life advice unrelated to the subject (and this goes to everyone), but everyone will have to eventually go out and interact with others, and you can't hide on the internet forever. If you do like the internet to escape, please just be aware of your limits and know what's healthy.

TRlPLE_T wrote:

There is a difference between being social and being competitive about being social. Yes, this was a more valid argument back when the leaderboards were still around, but it still comes off as borderline attention seeking.

If we go back to the 'safe space' argument, it should be safe for everyone, and not the few people dominating messages on the forum. What is one to do if their message gets ignored and doesn't get the small attention they wanted because someone else posted garbage? There's a lot of young people here who may not have the ability to understand or cope with it. If they came here to feel part of a community but aren't, then I can't honestly say it would be a safe space for them. We're not cracking down because we're assholes, we're also trying to level the playing field.

at this point just remove the forums entirely

Definitely makes my job easier but it's not happening. Although few, there are still some good topics out there.

I agree with the idea of the original poster receiving a warn, although other people probably shouldn't have been fueling it too which is why the warns may have been issued. A new term ASAP might be nice too.
