I checked, it was the 17th (Thursday)
Another benefit to Thursday(for consoles) is it gives an extra 24h for something like a shipping delay. You still get the full weekend for it.
Not to say that you can't release stuff on other days of the week, Nintendo was doing Fridays (which is still better) up until Jamboree.
But it's way easier to use the end of the week when the main audience is school kids + working adults.

Yeah, I think I'd find it better coming home from school in fall (I was on vacation when Jamboree came out and trying not to freak in the hotel room so I currently have no experience) and seeing a new Nintendo, PC, or mobile game than end of the week junk and waiting ANOTHER week just to try it out.
