Luckily not much (I'm talking about 100 VR losses) but over time, my biggest VR loss is 2k:

I was constantly playing against Mapno4 in many 1vs1 and I lost most of them and killed my VR.
Luckily I got the lost VR back and I also got more.

If I was Nintendo I'd:
1) Make a game about most forgotten characters in the Super Mario series (like DK Jr);
2) Discount some Mario games;
3) Allow Nintendo Fan games to exist without getting sued;
4) Allow piracy to 30 years and older games.
5) Put less taxes of import to companies that publish games on the E-shop
