Sure, the Switch has great games, but some/most of them were originally Wii U games, like Zelda BOTW, Mario Kart 8, Mario Bros. U, Mario 3D World, ect. Also, you can play games from almost every Nintendo console. You can play Wii U games (which, like stated earlier, most of them have been remade into Switch games), Wii games, Gamecube games (because mods), and every other console through Virtual Console. It also has a large modding scene, which most modern consoles just don't have (I think you know why), and this allows you to do a lot more with the console. Finally, while it may not have made the Wii U as revolutionary as the Switch, the idea of being able to play on two screens at once as a home console was pretty great.
I'm not trying to stir up an argument about this, just sharing my opinion of it.
(Also I've never had/used a Wii U so parts of this may be slightly off)

Why do people think that the Switch 1 is great and every other console (including the switch 2) is bad?

I'm the world's #1 Wii U fan lmao here we go. If I sound annoyed at any point just know that I'm not, I just get really heated about this sometimes
So, let's start with the fact that it can run Wii games. Maybe in 2012 this wasn't that big of a deal. But now, the Wii remains way more popular than the Wii U. The cheapest Wii I could find online was $90 CAD, while the cheapest Wii U was $48 CAD. So immediately it's a better option for playing the Wii's superior selection of games. Plus, it can run Wii U games (obviously) which includes some great titles like Splatoon, Super Mario Maker and Super Mario 3D World, even if that last one got a Switch port. Speaking of which, let's compare to the Switch; first of all, the Wii U has WAY more personality. I know that sounds dumb, but the menu, eShop, settings, etc. music just adds so much to a console for me and those things being gone on the Switch and Switch 2 just make those consoles so much worse to me. Switch 2 is different because of the visual and performance upgrades, making it probably better, but the Switch has no such crutches to fall back on. Besides, of course, its defining feature; being hybrid, which, in my opinion, is a bad thing. It makes the console more expensive, forces games to run with both modes, and makes Nintendo think whatever they do will work because so many people buy it (cough cough Mario Strikers Battle League cough cough). The Wii U, on the other hand, has two modes of play fused into one which is a genius gimmick. And before you say that's why the console flopped, no it's not. The console flopped because of bad marketing, and because the GamePad wasn't unique enough (it kinda was but whatever). Another feature I haven't even touched on yet is Miiverse; I absolutely loved Miiverse while it was still around and wish the Switch era had kept it. Miis in general just kinda died in the Switch era too as they got buried in system settings with barely any games showing them off, which really sucks and is something the Wii U did better (copying the Wii's homework, but the Wii U still did it well). Also, the Wii U/3DS online service was free. NSO is not. The GamePad does not have JoyCon drift. The GamePad also opens up tons of new options for games which is the only reason the Mario Maker series even exists. Essentially, the GamePad turns the Wii U into a home console version of the DS, which in my opinion is a very good thing.
Essay over lol, good luck

Totally agree with you there, it is honestly kind of bizarrely to me that anyone argues that switch sports is better. Switch Sports is a LOT worse, but, the switch 1 has games that completely outclass the Wii Us efforts, Mario Odyssey destroys 3d world, ( even though 3d world is a great game). And it is widely agreed upon that Mario party Jamboree is a better game than Mario party 10. Of course there are many more, so I may elaborate more.

I think that my initial comment may have been a little extreme, so sorry about that. I just wanted to clarify that I don’t think that the Wii U is a bad console, just kind of mid.
Also, you guys are REALLY good at arguing.

At first I thought this topic was kinda stupid but after I saw that y'all were actually respectful about each other's opinions, here's my thoughts as someone who's been around roughly since the peak of the Wii and DS.
In terms of how much "spirit" either console has, the Wii U quite clearly wins for me. The Switch feels more like a product than an experience, and even from an industrial perspective that's a rather shitty move (Nintendo works in entertainment, so I'd expect at least some heart put into even a console's home screen).
Even in terms of games, maybe there's some nostalgia bias here but I generally prefer Wii U games. I never really saw the appeal of Odyssey (hot take, bash me all you like, it's one of my least favourite 3D Mario games), and the Switch mostly consists of ports, I wouldn't even call them remakes because they've barely added anything new (take NSMBU DX, for example). Obviously I'd expect some ports and I'd probably buy them because I have enough money to spare to buy quite a few games, but the Switch kind of made it clear that Nintendo don't really see games as anything but products (look at what happened to the Miis before Living The Dream was announced, not the best example I know, and at least Nintendo isn't using generative AI to take away what little soul their games have left before they're just lifeless IPs, but yeah).
I mean of course Nintendo's a company and of course they're going to commercialise everything, that's how industry works, but it's certainly having an impact on how much I enjoy their newer games and consoles. So, for me, the Wii U wins.
P.S: Apologies, this argument is probably quite rusty, I definitely skimmed over some things and there's a lot of opinionated or biased things in here. If you want me to elaborate, just reply to this message, thank you.

For the Switch 2, it's mostly just long-time Nintendo fans realising that Nintendo is a company and they only see their IPs as marketable products; as for other consoles, it's mostly bias. There's also the fact that entertainment is a pretty subjective thing so nobody has the exact same opinions on everything lol

I'd like to elaborate on my previous comment by saying I'm not considering the game libraries. The Switch's library of games is undeniably better than the Wii U's (even though a lot of them are ports lol) but the libraries don't really have anything to do with the consoles themselves so I just didn't consider it

Interesting that the cheapest Wii you Chili’s find was 90 CAD, I got my Wii a few weeks ago, for only 40 USD, it is probably a regional difference. As for backwards comparability, I feel that the GCN actually does a better job. Having its Gameboy player accessory gives it comparability with gameboy, gameboy color, and gameboy advance. And by proxy, all NES & SNES games ported to those handhelds. Of course, the Wii U has an HDMI cable, and that is definitely a valid argument. Personality is a good point, but personality comes with a huge sacrifice, load times. With the nintendo switch, you can power the console on, and be playing a game within moments, while the Wii U takes a much longer time to load the same games. AND for Wii mode, the console has to reset itself entirely. Also, interesting fact, if you adjust the Wii Us launch price (350$) for inflation, it would cost about 490 USD today. And during the Wii U generation, they actually did create low quality games that were only meant to make money. (Mario tennis ultra smash, Amibo festival, ECT.) Now, I will say the Wii Us gimmick was kinda genius, taking the DS to the next level, the biggest problem is that they never really used it well, they failed to port a substantial amount of DS/3DS games to the system, and in lots of cases, the gamepad made things slow and clunky in lots of games, and was only really used super well in a few. But those few games work AMAZINGLY with it. Either way, there just isn’t enough. The gimmick itself did not make the Wii U flop, it was the lack of legitimately good uses for the gimmick. And of course the worst marketing in the history of mankind. The reason people say that the Gamepad was not unique enough, I’d be cause the PS Vita had the same functionality beforehand. As for social features and Miis, I have no arguments whatsoever. So instead, I’m gonna talk about Virtual Console and NSO. One big disadvantage about virtual console is the price, now hear me out, every NES game on virtual console would cost 5 dollars each, according to Google, the Wii U had about 94 nes games available. (PLZ fact check me if I’m wrong) this totals up to about 470$ while switch online has 100+ nes games (according to nintendo) so I think it’s fair to assume that most of if not all virtual console games are on switch meaning that it would take 23.5 years of NSO to match the price of every NES game on virtual console, not to mention that you also get loads of SNES and gameboy games with it. The gamepad is a higher quality controller than the joycons. And it would work well as a home console DS if nintendo used it better. (Or you can hack it I guess)
Anyways, great arguments, also forgive my numerous grammar issues, autocorrect hates me for some reason.

But Wii is backwards compatible table with GCN (which is widely agreed upon to have a better library I’ll let you be the judge of that)
