Why is everyone else so much faster?

Hi everyone, I started playing this game a few days ago and I'm really liking it. I used to play this with my cousing on the SNES when I was just a little kid and it brings up great memories! So thanks to the good people who made this website.
I have an issue though. I'd like to climb up the leaderboard for the Time Trials, but everyone else just seems to drive soo much faster!! I don't understand why this is. I've been honing my craft, but I can't even get close to top 20. When I look at some of these ghosts, they're not even driving well at all, but their kart just moves way faster.
Can anyone explain to me what's going on here?

It's maybe because those people use faster character or techniques like snaking

1. Most people pick daisy because of her handling stat, like in MKDS, speed won't matter because your drifting most of the time.
2. Most people that don't use daisy are using a custom character with her stats, but showing the character that you're using can help other people understand what to do.
3. Just like in MKDS, snaking is done by continuously drifting. The most difficult part is in straight lines because you need enough space to do it.
4. The most wise part to use a mushroom is a place that will save the most time. Some tracks, like GBA Bowser Castle II, there is no offroad, so you should use the place where there is a straight line because it is faster than drifting.
5. Some shortcuts can be done without the need of mushrooms. Some are easier to do that way, most likely because they skip a turn.

Something that tickles me hard is that you're ranked 7th worldwide in Time Trial mode but ask why people are way faster than you? I mean, 7th ranked you should be fast as a duck.
