Now for my actual thoughts on the item. I've never had any respect for the blue shell. As a pure casual it was annoying, but now I'm a lot more experienced and am in 1st a lot more often, it's a nightmare. As LuigiDawg mentioned, the Super Horn is a counter to it in MK8 but what are the chances of getting it in 1st? 1/40 or 2.5% (in a 12 player race). That's incredibly low. I get it's supposed to make the race more interesting, but the fact that the blue shell only spawns AT MINIMUM every 30 seconds, it doesn't do that good a job. It just bullies the 1 person who manages to break ahead instead of holding multiple players back.
You're not helping yourself by using the blue shell, you're helping 2nd place, a position you shouldn't be getting blue shells in anyway.
Oh, and don't even get me started on the MK7 rendition of the blue shell. Take the mechanics of the blue shell in MK8, but without the super horn. You have a fast item that has the ability to hit other players harder than other shells, when it's supposed to target a single player.
Sure, there are ways to dodge it, but those involve taking mushrooms or power items to first. If you have that sort of skill you should be far ahead enough for the blue shell not to matter.
