For the Mario Kart games I played so far in my opinion...
Mario Kart wii 10/10 I don't think I even need explaining about this one.
Mario Kart 7 2.5/10 you can look at what item the cpus have therefore you can be well prepared for it. However even if you're not in first, you can still get hit by it.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 4/10 same with MK7 but instead you don't see what item the cpus have but it will show the blue shell on the map (if you aren't including custom items) so you have the time to prepare yourself. However it is more annoying than MK7 because if you got a super horn, there is a chance that a Boo will steal it and a chance to get shocked by lightning which will take away your items. This will be more annoying especially when the blue shell has completely caught up to you.
