What is the difference between the n64 and the gamecube?

I don't understand why mario 64 is on the gamecube and not the n64 it literally has 64 in both names. The only way I tell the difference is that mario kart 64 is on the n64 (at least they got that right) whereas double dash is on the gamecube. Someone please clarify.

the difference between the n64 and gamecube is that the n64 is from 1996 and the gamecube is from 2001 but the n64 has lower quality graphics than the gamecube
