Going to lock the topic, AI is a pretty controversial topic and it's better to intervene before this potentially spirals into chaos. Already we've seen pretty mixed opinions, ranging from reasonable to genuine concerns and even the straight up delusional. We don't need to turn the forums into twitter (social media is worse for the world than AI imo but that's for another discussion that's preferably not on the site either).

My overall opinion including stuff that's been said in the topic already is in the spoiler below.

Spoiler [ShowHide]
Firstly, AI is a technology that isn't going away for the foreseeable future and so there's no point fear/doom mongering about it imo. What's important now is being aware about its impacts and how it should be used responsibly (which also includes straight up not using it where possible). There is unsurprisingly a pretty noteworthy example within the topic that I'll mention later. There are also some genuinely useful applications of AI such as medical AI and pathfinding AI, but I don't think there's any complaints about those so I'll skip over it.

If you did read the stuff in the topic then you'll know that AI isn't great for the environment due to it's water use, and for that reason we've banned its use on the site. Although basically anything we do has some sort of environmental impact, this is probably worse compared to other things.

Saying AI is the reason we have heatwaves is incredibly stupid. Heat waves are only temporary and have existed as long as the Earth has existed, so if we're making statements about the environment that ignore science then don't expect to be taken seriously, heck it probably backfires on people listening to you.

AI is pretty useful as an assistance tool and not as a replacement for things, although for some reason a lot of people are really cynical about it and choose to ignore it (googoogaga baby mentality tho please go outside). Most of you are like 15-16 max so I doubt there is much that is hard enough to warrant AI use, but it doesn't necessarily mean it should be entirely off-limits so don't think you're an absolute asshole if you do/have used it.

The notable example I mentioned earlier is using AI to learn math. I think this is perfectly valid since math has some concepts with a big learning curve and AI to assist you in learning new concepts is actually quite efficient, and that's not even including the potential bad quality of some teachers and/or the fact that other methods probably take similar amounts of energy and heaps more time. hillsrevival is using it as a learning tool here, and is still focusing on self-learning anyway, which I think is a very good and responsible use of AI.

AI use like this shouldn't be stigmatised because it's not "lazy" or being a "bad student", (and calculators won't help you learning shit like a Fourier series or a Laplace transform), and I think if you still think examples like this are war crime levels of bad then you're just lowkey pathetic and there's no nicer way to put it. I don't recommend using AI elsewhere at you guys' age, and should you actually need to use it then you're probably at an age where you're responsible enough to know the difference anyway.

TLDR: AI isn't entirely bad but there are undeniably more downsides than upsides at the moment, especially regarding the environment. Most of you don't really have a need to use it yet, but if you do need to use it then make sure it's used responsibly. AI is still strictly banned on MKPC.
