I am new to the game and I was just wondering how to unlock all the characters past Hammer bro.

The way to unlock characters is based only on the amount of "Gold Trophies" you got.
I use the ->" because actually, Silver and Bronze Trophies can participate in the unlocking of a character based on this calculation:
2 Silver Trophies = 1 Gold Trophy
2 Bronze Trophies = 1 Silver Trophy
so 4 Bronze Trophies = 1 Gold Trophy
Here's the characters and how you can unlock them.
