for me its a toss up between mk64 and smk

64 is heavily focussed on the multiplayer and as someone who has no friends to play with, i cant exactly play the game the way its meant to be played
the only unlockable is mirror mode meaning theres practically no reason to play the game since all tracks are available at the start
its tied with the least amount of playable tracks in the series and half of them are pretty simplistic and take awfully long to finish,
for example: luigi raceway, toads turnpike + rainbow road
the rubberbanding is one of the worst, even if you manage to pull a shortcut the CPUs can still catch up

as for smk it is completely rigged against the player
the CPUs having special items is completely unfair and allowing them to phase through thwomps and jump over red shells is blatant cheating
the tracks are definitely the weakest of the series which does make sense considering its the first game however some layouts are awfully similar to one another
for example: dp3, gv3 and rr are basically the same C shape
battle mode also being restricted to 2player is quite a shame cause the battle mode theme is a banger
