What about custom items? In a lot of Mario Kart Wii mods, there's a mega thundercloud item, which basically reverses what happens with the regular thundercloud. Instead of trying to hit someone to get it off of you (to not get shrunk), which can be hard at times, you avoid everyone else (to grow big yourself), which I think is a lot more interesting.
