I’m pretty sure it’s the time signature. 4/4 time means their is 4 beats per a bar on the sheet music, I might be wrong though.

4 crotchet beats in a bar(in this case), to be more precise. Also, Piranha Plant Cove is in 6/8, and Thwomp Ruins 12/8. There might be others, too. But I'm not gonna look for 'em lol.
