Collecting has probably been one of the biggest and most endless sources of income in the entertainment world for decades, with great notoriety since a certain George Lucas made a contract, underestimated at the time, with the financiers of Star Wars whereby he would keep the profits from the sale of action figures. Since then, the pop culture industry has learned and is also designing itself to profit from this. It is not uncommon for products to appear in the most diverse media dedicated especially to enhancing toy collections, as is the famous case of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, which is not by chance one of the brands present in Funko Fusion, a game that acts in a feedback stage, licensing a dynasty of licensed products to enhance its licensing.
Most likely, you who are reading this now may have one, two, dozens of these big-headed action figures on your shelf, on your desk, staring at you right now as you enjoy this analysis. If the idea of creating stylized themed products is nothing new, the so-called Funko Pops have taken the concept to its maximum potential, and practically every IP of relative relevance has its versions of these figures. It is no coincidence that, as someone who has long since succumbed to the appeal of these simple and expensive toys, the announcement of the game based on their universes seemed natural to me and, honestly, made me wonder why it took so long for them to come up with this idea, considering the success of LEGO games with more or less the same principle over the decades.
Funko Fusion
As a package that promises to merge a series of themed collections, Funko Fusion seemed like a true sandbox with absolutely infinite possibilities for its creators, something that ended up not being realized in practice (or only partially), most likely because if it must be quite expensive to work with one brand, imagine working with several. Right from the start, therefore, it is important to highlight that the game is far, far from bringing to life the most interesting collections ever released here in the physical world, and much of what is in the game may be surprising even for the most ardent fans of both collectibles and the main franchises in the world of entertainment.
If Jurassic World – and it is worth noting that the game initially dedicates this section to the new films, not the older ones from the Steven Spielberg generation – is one of the most obvious presences, others seem to be great ideas with interesting worlds to be explored, such as the aforementioned He-Man, as well as Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. I would be suspicious if I did not admit that Battlestar Galactica, one of my favorite series of all time, was not a pleasant surprise; and that Umbrella Academy is a great solution for those who are already saturated with the same Marvel and DC characters in games like LEGO. On the other hand, obscure or very niche things like The Thing (or The Thing, as it is known in Brazil) and Hot Fuzz (more famous here as Chumbo Grosso) seem too random to me, even though they are cult classics of cinema, to be at the forefront of this release.

There are more quotes, special appearances and expectations that other famous brands, such as Back to the Future or the already available (via DLC The Walking Dead) will be better populating this clash of worlds, but from the start, the initial package is confusing, flawed and not very exciting for the vast majority of people who are not so eclectic as to put Ramona Flowers investigating crimes or Nicholas Angels going through portals in Eternia. That said, the entire structure of the game is purposefully built on solid foundations to receive not only what was promised in the promotional campaign (and some already shown in trailers) NBCUniversal brands such as Chucky, Five Nights at Freddy’s, Invincible, Jaws, Knight Rider, M3GAN, The Mummy and Shaun of the Dead, but basically any others that the developers want and are able to license. The medium and long-term plans are still little known to us, poor mortals, but they are extraordinarily promising.
To fill this current digital shelf with characters, the game tells a story where we must assume one of the various forms – initially, four for each franchise – to help recover the crowns that will help save a dying Freddy, leader of the Funkos, after the corruption resulting from the invasion by a strange villain contaminated at the factory of these dolls. These crowns have been scattered throughout the seven kingdoms, so to speak, and only the protagonists will be able to recover them before the villain reaches them first and completes his evil plans to dominate this unexpected multiverse. It is at this point that we are led to relive altered versions of the stories and plots that we have seen before on TV or in the movies, with all the headstrong style of being.
