YO SAME! TWICE! Anyway yeah I start an approximately 2.8 second countdown when the block appears. It's also sometimes easier to dodge if you have a drift boost. Extra air time maybe.

so what i see is that you are safe if you keep inputting hops once you see the POW block squash itself for the first time. If it appears twice in a row the timing just gets waay off and i am doomed...

You can get "hit" by POWs btw

The only way it triggers is if you are grounded when the POW hits, spinning once or twice is fine.
